Weapons warnings and high drug use at San Dieguito Schools.

Healthy Kids Survey LCC

At least two weapons incidents were reported in November, one at Torrey Pines High School and the other at La Costa Canyon (see actual reports below). Fortunately they were addressed quickly, and while it was good to see that the Administration provided information to parents and the community members in a timely manner, it's a reminder that campus life for our students may not be as safe as parents think it is.

The 2017 Healthy Kids Survey revealed concerning student use of drugs and alcohol,

as well as other behaviors. Per the Healthy Kids Survey, approximately 11.3% of the seniors at LCC reported using LSD, 74% alcohol, almost 60% marijuana, and over 60% vaping devices. Reports from Torrey Pines were similar but Sunset topped the list with 85% of the seniors having used marijuana and alcohol, 80% reported using vaping devices, 28% LSD, 22% cocaine/crack, and over 30% had used tranquilizers and cough medicines.

Please attend the next school board meeting on December 14th at 6:30 p.m.

It is important that our School Board address their vision for the future of our District. The Status Quo can't continue; it is harmful to our students and our community.

Falcon Families,

Today we were made aware that a student had a weapon on campus. Administration intervened immediately and SDPD was notified and responded. The student in possession of the weapon was identified, and removed from class. The weapon was a BB gun and not an actual firearm. There was no specific threat to any students, and the situation was resolved without incident.

Because of the quick response, there was not a need to put the school into a secure campus or lockdown mode. We are working with SDPD to follow up on the incident.

Classes are proceeding as usual and the campus is safe.

Thank you

Rob Coppo Principal Torrey Pines High School

Dear LCC Families,

In an effort to provide clear and timely information, I want to update you regarding an investigation conducted at school today. LCC administration worked in collaboration with Carlsbad Police to investigate a report of a possible threat involving firearms. The investigation was initiated based upon an anonymous message sent to Carlsbad Police on Tuesday night. Based upon this, early this morning LCC administration and Carlsbad Police interviewed students to ensure this possible threat was given the attention necessary to ensure a safe learning environment for all students. Based upon our investigation, we do not believe there was any imminent danger nor do we believe there is any ongoing threat posed to our students or staff.

LCC Administration and staff and our law enforcement partners take all reports seriously and I want to personally thank Carlsbad police for their swift and professional assistance with this investigation. As a school community and family, we embrace and promote the motto, "If You See Something, Say Something."

The district has an anonymous reporting online service and 24-hour hotline posted on the homepage of its website at www.sduhsd.net.
